An international training course on Control of Nuclear Material in Use, Movement, and Storage was held between 4 and 8 November in Budapest, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research (HUN-REN EK-CER). Thirty-three participants from 23 countries attended the training. During the opening ceremony, participants were welcomed by the representative of the IAEA, the head of the Nuclear Security Department (NSD) of the HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research, and the head of the Nuclear Security, Non-proliferation and Emergency Preparedness and Response Department from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA).

During the one-week training, the participants – from all over the world learned about nuclear material accountancy and control as key tools for nuclear security through presentations, group work, and case studies.

Half of the trainees represented regulatory bodies; the other half came from facilities, but all had a background in natural sciences or engineering.

On the last day of the training (8th of November), a facility visit to the HUN-REN EK-CER was organized, during which presentations introduced the Institute and the Research Reactor to the participants. After that, the participants visited the labs of the NSD – the Technical Support Organisation to the HAEA regarding nuclear security and safeguards – to learn about its activities.
This was the first time the IAEA organized an NMAC training in Hungary.
